Armchairs and chairs
In Classical Chinese furniture there are armchairs, chairs and folding chairs.
The armchairs
The « Rose style » armchair
In the North of China it is low and the back and arm are at a right angle.
In the South it is called a « writing chair », its small size makes it easy to carry around while offering little obstruction to the view, the concept of space is important to the Chinese.
The « Scholar Cap » armchair
It name comes from its resemblance to the shape of the Scholar´s Cap during the Golden Age of the Ming dynasty. Its arms and cross pieces jut outwards.
Round-backed or « Horseshoe-back » armchair
It is the most common in ancient China. It is very comfortable as the curving superstructure forms a continuous support for the back that lowers for the arms.
The chairs
The « Lantern » style chairs named after their shape resembling that of a bamboo lantern, and the « Scholar Cap » chairs do not feature armrests.
The folding chairs, which are meant for use inside as well as outside, usually have leather or caned seats and a straight or rounded back.
